The Good the Bad the Weird

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Finally got a chance to watch The Good, the Bad, the Weird by Ji-woon Kim, last night. I had been waiting for a while for it to come to Netflix, and it was finally available. I saw it on the previews for Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle and was interested in it ever since. I really enjoy films from North Eastern Asia. Directors like Stephen Chow, Ji-woon Kin and Chan-wook Park really have a sense for action and comedic relief.

I feel that this region has been very under appreciated in the realms of the film world. Most people think of Eastern European directors when considering great directors. Names like Fellini, Truffaut, Godard, and Bergman are some the first names you come across when you first dive into “Art House” pictures. However, one can’t look past perhaps the greatest director of all, Akira Kurosawa, whose influence inspired me to discover other North Eastern Asia filmmakers.

Modern filmmakers from the region bring a mix of blockbuster Hollywood, traditional kung fu and comedy to their films. Instead of modern American action films, which create over-the-top characters with overly-produced visuals, films from this region bring archetypal characters with relatable flaws, and are put together in a well-planned and designed opera of film making.

What do to and when to do it

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Recently, I’ve found myself putting things off. When most people say this, they usually mean they put a project that just popped into their head off until tomorrow. For the most part, however, I find that the time of this delay is a lot shorter, not a day, or an hour, but a couple minutes. I’ve found myself thinking, “I kind of feel like drawing in my sketchbook.” Only to put it off until “after I read my email” or “after I check for new blog posts.” Even though these activities only take several minutes, you completely loose that spark of creativity. Sure that time you spent checking emails, or reading an interesting blog post isn’t necessarily wasted, but it could have waited until you finished fulfilling that spark.

I want to try and make a point to have specific times during my free time that I allow for email, Google Reader, or mindless surfacing but only after I accomplish something worth being proud of. Take a look at one of my favorite motion artists take on this very point, Johnny Kelly‘s Procrastination.

New Digs Part 2

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

So remember a month or two ago I mentioned something about “new digs” and how I was going to redesign the site. Yea, well, putting things off til tomorrow ends up putting things off to next week, to next month, etc. Add that on top of moving to a new apartment with my girlfriend, and this whole “new digs” thing kinda got put on the back burner.

So after we got all moved in and settled I was asked to redesign Shannon’s brother’s site, Temporary Distortion. After that was finished Shannon asked me to help her with her site, which I did. So after helping everyone else, I decided I needed to finally buckle down and redo mine own. Looking back at the old design is really incredible, considering I only coded it a little over a year ago. Its amazing all the great things that have happened in my life since then. It seems like only last week I was hunting for jobs on Craigslist everyday, scouring motion graphics forums for the latest tip or trick, and spending the majority of my day wondering if this whole college education thing was ever going to land me a decent job.

Well here I am, one year, three months after I graduating and I’m sitting in a great apartment in Newtown with my girlfriend and our dog, I am an integral part of the web design team at a small design firm, and I worked my way to become the Director of Photography for Philly Beer Scene Magazine. Strange that none of those things requires a degree in Film/Video or Philosophy, yet I probably won’t be where I am without either.

So all in all, things are great. I’ll be working on filling up the portfolio section all this week, so check back for more updates. Hope you like the new look.

New Digs

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Probably should get back to posting and updating my portfolio. I upgraded to WordPress 3.0 and using the new default theme that I plan on editing in the next couple weeks. Also I plan on consolidating my blog site and my portfolio site into one super site of mega incredibleness. Keep an eye out for some changes around philmadelphia city.
